Transforming Namma Yatri’s Ride Booking Experience to Power the Next Expansion Phase

Transforming Namma Yatri’s Ride Booking Experience to Power the Next Expansion Phase

Project Specs

Role: Product Designer (1 of 2)

Year: 2022 - 2024

Platform: Android, iOS

Live App: Try Namma Yatri

Overview

Namma Yatri is an app that connects the auto Rickshaw drivers directly to the users, without the 3rd party like Uber, Ola, Lyft etc. This app was created for the benefit of the drivers with the coordination of the auto-rickshaw association. So no commission is taken from the driver. The commission is usually huge, up to 30% - 40%.

“This project exclusively discusses the main features of the app, it’s redesign and its purpose. I began working on this project independently in 2019. However, the app has since become successful, and i now collaborate with four product designers and wonderful illustrators.”

Namma Yatri is expanding rapidly, now live in 14 states and gearing up for its USA launch!

Namma Yatri is expanding rapidly, now live in 14 states and gearing up for its USA launch!

Namma Yatri has grown rapidly, expanding beyond Bangalore to a broader audience. When I initially designed the app, it was focused solely on Bangalore, taking inspiration from the iconic auto-rickshaw colors and the city’s vibe. However, with its expansion to 14 states and plans for a USA launch, it was time to rethink the design.

We transitioned from a Bangalore-centric visual identity to a sleek, contemporary design that reflects current trends and ensures consistency across regions. Additionally, we migrated the technology stack from pure script to React, enabling greater flexibility and scalability. To personalize the experience, we introduced customizable themes, allowing the app's color profile to align with the cultural nuances of each city.

Discover -> Define -> Design -> Deliver

Discover -> Define -> Design -> Deliver

We began by addressing the primary use case, drawing insights from market competitors and collaborating closely with the driver association. We identified key issues with existing booking platforms like Ola and Uber and worked to resolve them in our app. As part of the redesign, we focused on creating a visually appealing experience for users while tackling critical problems such as ride cancellations.

Designing for Everyone, Empowering Every Journey.

Designing for Everyone, Empowering Every Journey.

I incorporated accessibility features to enable people with disabilities to seamlessly use the app. Key updates included allowing users to specify their accessibility needs, which are then communicated directly to drivers to ensure a supportive experience. Additionally, we introduced educational pop-ups, ride preference customization, all designed to make the app inclusive. The goal is to design with inclusivity, including support for colorblind users.

Introducing tipping culture via boost search

Introducing tipping culture via boost search

Tipping isn't a common practice in India, but we wanted to introduce this feature in Namma Yatri in a way that doesn't make the user feel like they’re paying extra. The idea is to offer a tip to expedite finding a ride, while also providing an incentive for drivers who may not be fully satisfied with the app’s fare. The goal was to minimize friction between drivers and customers, making the experience smoother and more rewarding for both parties.
