Overview

Namma Yatri is an app that connects the auto Rickshaw drivers directly to the users, without the 3rd party like Uber, Ola, Lyft etc. This app was created for the benefit of the drivers with the coordination of the auto-rickshaw association. So no commission is taken from the driver.

The commission is usually huge, up to 30% - 40%. First started in Bangalore, India. Now it has expanded across different states in India and is gearing up for International launch.

Business Goal

Redesign the app and experience to resonate with a broader audience while maintaining brand consistency, as the platform expanded to multiple states within India and is gearing up for International launch.

Understanding the existing designs

To fully grasp the challenges users faced, we first conducted a thorough analysis of our current app. We did this by reviewing several user testing insights provided by the company.

The design felt emotionless. It didn’t reflect Namma Yatri’s core values of transparency, zero commission, and driver empowerment.

As the platform expanded, the existing design couldn’t accommodate new features or scale effectively.

With multiple new services like rentals, intercity rides, and ambulances, users found it hard to locate their daily ride options.

Solution

I began by identifying the key pain points users were facing in the current experience and focused on addressing those through the redesign. My goal was to go beyond a purely visual refresh and improve the overall booking experience. The core idea is to help users book a ride as quickly as possible, removing unnecessary friction and distractions while maintaining a modern, intuitive interface. At the same time, I introduced moments of visual delight to keep users engaged while we search for a ride.

Each feature was designed to stay simple, transparent, and informative — avoiding dark patterns and reducing confusion. The result is a modern take on a ride hailing app that suits all the audience across the globe.

HMW’S

Once we gathered all our research insights, we ran a How Might We session to turn problems into opportunities and spark new ideas.

HMW make it easier for riders to discover and book rides quickly without cognitive overload?

HMW be transparent in-terms of pricing?

HMW built trust between drivers and riders?

HMW keep the homepage visually simple while supporting multiple business goals?

HMW present driver details in a way that riders can verify in real world conditions.

Learnings & Outcome

Currently, Namma Yatri has 5M+ active users, maintaining a ⭐ 4.8 rating on the Play Store and ⭐ 4.7 on the App Store.

Looking back, what stood out most was our commitment to iteration. We kept refining the experience based on real user feedback and held a high bar for quality & never settled for less

Interviews and user stories are great, but for niche audiences, you need to almost become the user to truly understand what they need.
